Basic Parasceva Sock
Make two.
Materials
3 oz DK weight yarn
2 3.25 mm circs
6-8 markers
Gauge: 6 sts or 8 rows per inch.
Special Abbreviations
M1– make 1 st using any method (the raised increase works well)
M1f – Insert tip of right needle into the purl bump at the base of the next stitch to be worked, lift that loop onto the left needle, and knit into it as if it were an ordinary stitch.
M1b – Insert tip of right needle into the purl bump at the base of the next stitch to be worked, lift that loop onto the left needle, and knit into the back of the loop as if it were an ordinary stitch.
When working the m1 and m1b, be sure to position the new stitch on the left needle in the usual way, with the leg closest to your right hand forward.
Using one needle, cast on 44 [56] sts for a woman’s [man’s] sock. Slip half of the sts on to a second circular needle, and position to knit in the round.
Cuff (3[4] inches)
Rnd 1: * K2, p2 *.
Rep Rnd 1 22[30] times.
Rnd 2: K.
Rep Rnd 2 twice.
Heel
This heel starts like a short-row heel and ends like a common heel, with two connecting rounds in between.
Setup Rounds
Place marker between two center stitches (St 11 and 12[14 and 15]) on each needle.
Rnd 3: K3, m1, (k5, m1) once [twice], k to last 8[13] sts, m1, (k5, m1) once [twice], k3: 48[62] sts.
Rnd 4: K.
You’ve increased 4[6] sts (10% of cast-on sts) to the heel section, distributing sts evenly.
Short-row Heel section
Row 5: K to 1 st before marker on first needle; turn.
Row 6: Sl1, p to end of first needle; p to 1 st before marker on second needle; turn.
Row 7: Sl1, k to end of second needle; k to 2 sts before marker on first needle; turn.
Row 8: Sl1, p to end of first needle; p to 2 sts before marker on second needle; turn.
Row 9: Sl1, k to end of second needle; k to 3 sts before marker on first needle; turn.
Row 10: Sl1, p to end of first needle; p to 3 sts before marker on second needle; turn.
Row 11: Sl1, k to end of second needle; k to 4 sts before marker on first needle; turn.
Row 12: Sl1, p to end of first needle; p to 4 sts before marker on second needle; turn.
Continue as established until you work the following two rows:
Even row: Sl1, p to end of first needle; p4[6] on second needle; turn.
Odd row: Sl1, k3[5] to beginning of rnd.
This is the narrowest point of the heel (one fifth of the cast-on sts).
Connecting Rounds
Place a secondary set of markers after the 4th[6th] and before the 4th[6th] to last sts of the round. Each needle should have 4[6] sts, a marker, 8[10] widely spaced sts, another marker, and 12[15] sts. The markers help you know where the widely spaced stitches begin and end, points that are easy to miss in the throes of knitting.
Rnd 13: K to marker, sm, (m1b, k1 tbl) to second marker, sm, m1b, k to third marker, sm, (m1f, k1) to fourth marker, sm, m1f, k to end.
Remove secondary markers.
Rnd 14: K.
(You should have 33[42] sts on each needle.
Common Heel Section
Rnd 15: K to 3 sts before marker, k2 tog, k1, sm, k to marker, sm, k1, ssk, k to end.
Rnd 16: K.
Rep Rnds 15-16 till you have 48[62] sts (the original number of cast-on stitches + ten percent).
Foot
Rnd 17 and all foot rnds: K.
Stop when the instep, which starts two rounds below the ribbing, is 60[68] (small), 64[72] (medium), or 68[76] (large) rounds long.
Toe
For men’s socks only, work the next two rounds:
Rnd A (men’s): K5, * k2 tog, k8, rep from * to last 7 sts, ending k2 tog, k5.
Rnd B (men’s): K.
For all socks, place a marker every 6[7] sts. You’ll have 3 markers on each needle, remembering that two additional markers hang invisibly at the points where the needles meet.
Rnd 18: * K2 tog, k to marker, sm *.
Rnds 19-20: K.
Rep Rnds 18-20 twice: 32[40] sts.
Then work Rnds 18-19 2[3] times: 16 sts.
To reposition the work so that the instep is on one needle and the sole is on the other–using the second needle, k first 8 sts of first needle (24 sts on second needle and 8 sts on first needle); then starting at the end farthest from the working yarn, slip 8 sts from the second needle to the first needle (8 sts on each needle).
Row 21: P all sole sts on second needle.
Turn sock inside out and three-needle bind off, purling sts together.
Weave in ends.
